What it adds

More than a train mod

Transit engine

Trains, tracks, stations, signalling, route maps, and timetables — the core systems FoundryMTR is built on.

Performance focus

NextGen rebuilds the classic MTR systems for modern Minecraft and large player-built networks.

Server integration

Tuned to run as the shared backbone of the FoundryMTR world, not just a client toy.

Launcher-distributed

Shipped as part of the FoundryMTR modpack — the launcher installs the exact pinned build.

MTR-NextGen Changelog

MTR-NextGen is an enhanced build of Minecraft Transit Railway focused on restoring missing features, improving performance, expanding London Underground content (Implemented in all NextGen versions of MTR by default), and making large transit networks smoother to play on.

New & Restored Content

Working elevators/lifts are back

Elevator cabins now appear and function in-world again.

This includes:

  • visible lift cabins;
  • opening and closing doors;
  • riding inside the cabin;
  • in-cabin floor selection menu;
  • automatic cabin placement.

London Underground content restored and expanded

A large amount of London Underground content has been restored and updated for the current MTR version.

This includes around 119 LU blocks, such as:

  • Tube tunnel blocks;
  • station blocks;
  • concrete variants;
  • railings and stairs;
  • roundels;
  • station-name signs;
  • poles;
  • décor blocks;
  • Northern Line PIDS displays with live arrival information;
  • 4 London Underground train recolours.

Many of these blocks were lost or broken during the move from the older London Underground add-on code. MTR-NextGen restores them with improved placement, corrected facing direction, better collision, proper inventory rendering, and readable display names.

Performance Improvements

Better performance in sign-heavy stations

London Underground and MTR text displays now use smarter rendering caches.

This helps reduce unnecessary repeated work for:

  • station-name signs;
  • route signs;
  • route displays;
  • PIDS displays;
  • busy stations with lots of signs;
  • large rail networks.

In normal terms: signs and displays should be less wasteful to render, especially in detailed stations.

Improved train audio handling

Busy depots can create a lot of train sounds at once. MTR-NextGen adds smarter sound handling so the most important train sounds are kept first.

This helps make sure:

  • the train you are riding stays audible;
  • nearby trains are prioritized;
  • far-away trains are less likely to crowd out important sounds.

Smoother riders and lifts

Remote players riding trains or lifts should appear smoother, with less snapping or sudden movement.

Reduced texture update spam

MTR-NextGen reduces repeated dynamic texture refreshes, which can help when many signs, route maps, or displays update close together.

Cleaner rendering hot paths

Several small rendering optimizations were added to reduce unnecessary repeated work while keeping visuals the same.

Better server packet handling

For some server broadcasts, MTR-NextGen reduces repeated packet encoding work by preparing the shared data once instead of repeating the same work separately for every player.

Server Stability & Scalability

Cleaner server console

MTR-NextGen can suppress a harmless but noisy console message seen on many modded Fabric/NeoForge servers:

Sending unknown packet 'clientbound/minecraft:disconnect'

This is config-gated and designed to fail safely.

NeoForge dedicated server fix

Fixed a NeoForge dedicated-server startup crash caused by a chunk event being registered in the wrong place.

NeoForge servers should now boot properly with MTR-NextGen.

Webserver hardening

Improved the built-in webserver behavior and removed a risky port-80 configuration issue.

Runtime leak fix

Fixed a server runtime cleanup issue by clearing arrival-cache data when the server stops.

Server diagnostics

Added server-safe diagnostics that can show useful health information, including an average TPS window and read-only status snapshot.

Compatibility & Tools

Fabric and NeoForge support

MTR-NextGen supports both:

  • Fabric;
  • NeoForge.

The project now uses NeoForge instead of old Forge.

Performance mod compatibility

MTR-NextGen is designed to work alongside common performance mods such as:

  • Sodium;
  • Lithium;
  • FerriteCore.

Note: Indium is no longer required in 1.21.4

New command tools

MTR-NextGen includes a command suite for diagnostics and troubleshooting.

Main command:

/mtrenhanced

Alias:

/mtrng

These commands can show system status, export reports, check individual enhancement systems, and toggle Safe Mode.

Safe Mode

Safe Mode lets server owners or players temporarily turn off MTR-NextGen enhancements and fall back closer to normal MTR behavior.

This is useful for testing, troubleshooting, or comparing behavior.

Compatibility Notes

MTR-NextGen is designed to preserve:

  • MTR 4.x saves;
  • existing world data;
  • existing resource formats;
  • existing add-on behavior where possible.

All enhancements are additive, config-gated, and Safe-Mode reversible.

Compatibility with more MTR add-ons are coming soon in future releases in the NextGen version of MTR!
